How to Prepare for Furnace & Duct Cleaning

A few minutes of prep helps the job go faster and protects your home. Here’s exactly what to do before, during and after — plus the real pros and cons of duct cleaning.

Technician preparing ductwork for cleaning

Before we arrive

  • Clear a path to the furnace and to your main return vents — we’ll connect our equipment there.
  • Move light furniture, rugs or boxes sitting directly on top of floor vents.
  • Pick up small or fragile items near the vents and furnace.
  • Secure pets in a closed room — there’s some noise and an open door for the hose.
  • Leave a parking spot near the door for our truck-mounted unit if you can.
  • Make a note of any vents that are blocked, painted over, or that you’re worried about.

What happens during the clean

We seal the system and use powerful suction with rotating brushes/air whips to pull dust, debris and buildup out of the supply and return ducts, the main trunk lines and the furnace blower area. Most homes take about 1–2 hours. You don’t need to do anything during the visit — just keep kids and pets clear of the work area.

After the clean

Pop your vent covers and furniture back, and replace your furnace filter if it’s due — clean ducts plus a fresh filter is the best combo. You should notice less dust settling and better airflow. Curious how often to repeat it? See how often you should clean your furnace & ducts.

Furnace & duct cleaning: pros and cons

Pros:

  • Less dust on furniture and in the air — helpful for allergies
  • Better airflow and a furnace that doesn’t work as hard
  • Removes renovation debris, pet hair and buildup you can’t reach
  • Especially worth it after a reno, a move, or if ducts have never been cleaned

Cons / when it’s less urgent:

  • A newer home that’s only a year or two old may not need it yet
  • It’s not an annual must for every home — every few years is plenty for most
  • Watch for “$99” bait-and-switch operators — see our honest cost guide

Preparing for duct cleaning — FAQ

How do I prepare for duct cleaning?

Clear a path to your furnace and return vents, move light furniture off floor vents, pick up small items nearby, secure pets, and leave parking near the door. That’s really all that’s needed.

Do I need to move furniture for duct cleaning?

Only light items sitting directly on or blocking vents. We work around larger furniture — just make sure we can reach the vents and the furnace.

Is duct cleaning worth it?

For most homes, every few years — yes. It cuts dust, improves airflow, and removes buildup you can’t reach, especially after a renovation or move. A brand-new home may not need it yet.

How long does furnace and duct cleaning take?

Most homes take about 1–2 hours depending on size, number of vents and how much buildup there is.
