How to Prepare for Carpet Cleaning

A few minutes of prep gets you a better, faster clean. Here’s exactly what to do before, during and after — including whether you really need to vacuum first.

Before we arrive

  • Pick up small items, toys, cords and anything off the floor.
  • Move what you can — light chairs, side tables, plant pots. Leave the heavy furniture to us.
  • Vacuum if you have time (see below) — it helps, but it’s not essential.
  • Point out any problem spots or stains so we can pre-treat them.
  • Secure pets in a safe room, and plan a clear path to the door for our hoses.

Should you vacuum before carpet cleaning?

It helps, but you don’t have to. Vacuuming lifts loose surface dirt and hair so our cleaning focuses on the deep, ground-in soil. A good pro vacuums or pre-grooms as part of the job anyway — so if you’re short on time, don’t stress. If you do vacuum, a slow single pass over high-traffic areas is plenty. There’s no need to put anything on the carpet beforehand.

During the clean

Keep kids and pets out of the rooms being cleaned, and leave a door open for the hose line. The job is usually quick — most homes take 1–2 hours. You don’t need to do anything; just let us work and tell us if you spot an area you want extra attention on.

After the clean

  • Drying: most carpets are dry in 6–10 hours — see how long carpet takes to dry and how to speed it up.
  • Walking: light foot traffic in clean socks is fine after a few hours; best to stay off until dry.
  • Furniture: wait until the carpet is fully dry, then use foil or plastic tabs under legs for the first day to prevent stains.
  • Airflow: run fans or the furnace fan to dry faster and avoid wicking spots.

Preparing for carpet cleaning — FAQ

Should I vacuum before the carpet cleaners come?

It helps but isn’t required. A quick vacuum of high-traffic areas lifts loose dirt and hair, but a professional clean includes grooming or vacuuming as part of the process.

Do I need to move my furniture?

Move small, light items and anything off the floor. Leave heavy furniture — we work around it or move it as needed and protect it afterward.

What should I put on the carpet before cleaning?

Nothing. There’s no need to apply any product beforehand — just point out stains so we can pre-treat them properly.

How soon can I walk on the carpet afterward?

Light foot traffic in clean socks is usually fine after a few hours, but it’s best to stay off it until fully dry, and wait until it’s completely dry before replacing furniture.
