Furnace Humidifier Pad: What It Is, When to Change It & How
The little pad in your furnace humidifier is what adds moisture to your home’s dry winter air. Replace it about once a year. Here’s how it works, when it’s due, and how to swap it.

What is a furnace humidifier pad?
A humidifier pad (also called a water panel, evaporator pad or humidifier filter) is the metal-mesh or fibre panel inside your furnace-mounted humidifier. Water trickles over it and the furnace’s warm airflow passes through, picking up moisture and carrying it into your home. Over a season the pad collects mineral scale and gunk, which is why it needs replacing.
How a furnace humidifier works
When your furnace runs in winter, a valve lets a small flow of water run over the pad. Warm, dry furnace air blows through the wet pad, evaporates some of the water, and the now-humidified air goes out through your ducts. A humidistat controls the target humidity. Dry indoor air in an Alberta winter causes static, cracked skin, and damage to wood floors and furniture — the humidifier is what fixes that, and the pad is the part that wears out.
Signs the pad is dirty or needs replacing
- Crusty white mineral buildup or a stiff, clogged-looking pad
- Low indoor humidity even with the humidifier running
- A musty smell or visible mould on the pad
- It’s been more than a year (or a heavy season) since the last change
How often to change it
Once per heating season is the rule of thumb — typically at the start of winter. In areas with hard water (much of the Edmonton region), heavy mineral buildup can mean changing it mid-season too. A fresh pad keeps humidity working and stops bacteria and mould from circulating through your ducts.
How to change a furnace humidifier pad
- Turn off the furnace and the humidifier’s water supply valve.
- Open the humidifier housing on the side of the furnace or ductwork (usually a snap-off or screw-off cover).
- Slide out the old pad and note its orientation — many pads have an “up/airflow” arrow.
- Wipe out any scale or sediment in the tray.
- Slide in the new pad the same way (arrow pointing up / toward airflow), close the housing.
- Turn the water and furnace back on and check for even water flow.
Buy the pad by your humidifier’s brand and model number. If you’d rather not, we can check and replace it during a furnace service.

Furnace humidifier pad — FAQ
What is a furnace humidifier pad?
It’s the mesh or fibre panel inside a furnace-mounted humidifier. Water runs over it and warm furnace air passes through, picking up moisture to humidify your home. It collects mineral scale over time and needs replacing.
How often should I change the humidifier pad?
About once per heating season, usually at the start of winter. With hard water you may need to change it mid-season too.
Where is the humidifier pad located?
Inside the humidifier unit mounted on the side of your furnace or on the nearby ductwork. Open the snap-off or screw-off cover and the pad slides out.
How do I know if it’s working?
You should feel comfortable humidity in winter with less static and dry skin. White mineral crust, a musty smell, or low humidity with the unit running all mean the pad needs replacing.
