Dryer Vent Cleaning: A Hidden Fire Risk Worth Taking Seriously

It’s one of the most overlooked jobs in the house, and one of the most important: cleaning your dryer vent. Lint buildup in dryer vents is a leading cause of house fires — and it’s almost entirely preventable.
Why lint is so dangerous
Every load you dry sheds lint. Your dryer’s lint trap catches some of it, but plenty still travels into the vent line behind the machine. Lint is highly flammable, and as it builds up it restricts airflow. That traps heat, and with a dryer running hot, that combination is exactly how vent fires start.
Signs your dryer vent is clogged
- Clothes take more than one cycle to dry
- The dryer and laundry room feel unusually hot
- There’s a burning smell when the dryer runs
- The lint trap fills up faster than normal
- You can’t remember the last time the vent was cleaned
How often should you clean it?
For most homes, cleaning the dryer vent once a year is a good rule of thumb. If you do a lot of laundry, have a large household, or your vent line is long, you may want it done more often.
Beyond safety, a clean vent means your dryer runs more efficiently — shorter drying times, less wear on the machine, and lower energy use. It’s a small job that protects your home and saves you money.
